Can love really conquer all?
*** my story is title Man-Trapped Madeline and it’s about a rural butch veterinarian who gets caught unprepared when her girlfriend announces she wants a baby.
“I’ll miss you.” I stood in the kitchen with my arms around Chloe, holding her as I always did, until the very last minute before she had to go catch her plane back to the big city. Never one for goodbyes, our relationship ironically seemed built around them. Like a butterfly, Chloe was always leaving and coming, arriving and departing. She and I had just shared two long weeks of bliss here in my rustic-but-modernly appointed home, and I was reticent to let her go, more so this time than ever before. Yet I refused to spoil our parting by starting another, move to the small town, argument.
She pulled back from my embrace. “I’ll miss you, too. But you know I have to get back to work. Got bills to pay.”
Knowing she did didn’t make parting any easier. In my opinion, it made it worse. The same questions always floated to the top of my mind. Why couldn’t she stay here with me permanently in Butte, Montana? Why did it always seem easier for her to leave?
Worry niggled at me. Did she have another lover stowed in Cincinnati? Had she lied to me and was really married? Sighing, I gazed down into her mink brown eyes searching for answers.
Chloe stiffened in my arms. “What? What is it?”
She shook her head and stepped out of my arms entirely, spinning around so I couldn’t see her face.
I took two steps toward her trying to keep the alarm out of my voice. “What’s going on? Are you okay?”
She whirled and flashed me a smile, but her eyes radiated worry. “There’s something I’m going to do when I get home that I haven’t told you about … yet.”
I scratched my short-trimmed dark hair and prayed for patience, but unease quickly settled into the middle of my chest. It wasn’t like her to keep secrets from me, at least not that I knew of. I sure didn’t have any secrets from her. What she saw was what she got—a stocky mid-thirties rural veterinarian butch living in a comfortable, modernized cabin, who was ragingly in lust with her.
“All right. Is it about your job?”
She shook her head, swishing the cascade of blonde curls around her shoulders. The hair always made her appear young and innocent, but I wasn’t quite buying it.
The worst-case scenario popped into my mind. “Are you … leaving me?”
She came forward and took my hand. “No, silly. But I have made a decision you might not like.”
Oh boy. I was too afraid to ask, so I remained silent, waiting.
She must have gathered her courage from somewhere deep within and found enough of it because her head lifted and her chin came up. “I want a baby.”
